The Emergency Care Assistant role involves you being exposed to a variety of patient of patient facing environments, both on the frontline and event medical services. You will be responsible, along with your crewmate, for responding to emergency and non-emergency situations whilst ensuring patients receive high quality, compassionate care at all times. When working with a patient transport attendant, you will act as a senior team member taking on the responsibility of clinical procedures as well as your crewmate. Spark Medical understands the importance of developing staff skillset, offering support with CPD events, ambulance driver training and annual Basic Life Support or Immediate Life Support to committed staff members.
Job Summary
An Emergency Care Assistant (ECA) involves providing high quality and compassionate care while attending to and conveying patients who require emergency or urgent care.
An ECA will work with an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) or HCPC Paramedic on a double crewed ambulance responding to emergency and urgent calls on behalf of an NHS Ambulance Service.
- Respond to emergency and urgent calls on behalf of an NHS Ambulance Service on a double crewed ambulance with an EMT or Paramedic.
- Assess and attend to patients and service users provide treatment and convey (as required), including safe and effective administering emergency care, moving and handling manoeuvres using manual handling aids, techniques and equipment. When administering a medicine within scope of practice, it must be done in accordance with Spark Medical’s clinical practice guidelines relating to the NHS Ambulance Services and JRCALC guidelines.
- Provide treatment and management up to the post-holder’s assessed competency and capabilities in line with their training, scope of practice and standard of care expected of their clinical grade.
- Make sure authorisation is sought prior to the discharge of a patient from your care, including onward referrals to the next echelon of care i.e. a registered healthcare professional.
- Take relevant information from carers or others at the scene, reporting to healthcare professional, hospitals or others as required whilst ensuring patient confidentiality is maintained.
- Be aware of the patient’s social and environmental condition and report any matters of concern to the appropriate person or body.
- Actively participate in personal and environmental cleaning routines (including vehicles, equipment and areas of the garaging facilities) to ensure that infection prevention and control standards are adhered to.
- Drive all vehicles in emergency/non-emergency situations legally and in accordance with the Spark Medical driving policy while demonstrating consideration for the comfort and safety of the patient, vehicle sympathy and showing consideration for other road users.
- When working with a Patient Transport Attendant, act as the senior team member and be responsible for the PTA at all times, maintaining clinical responsibility.
- Carry out vehicle and equipment checks at the start of and during each shift to ensure the readiness of the vehicle, equipment and consumables to respond as required. Report all defects and damage in accordance with Spark Medical policies and procedures.
- Achieve and maintain competence in all relevant skills and knowledge, actively engage in CPD events and keep a personal development portfolio.
- Perform any other duties commensurate with these responsibilities, the band of the post and skills and qualifications of the post-holder.
Person Specification
Essential
- Must hold a valid FREC 4 qualification (Including in date ILS)
- Must hold a full UK manual driving licence with a maximum of 6 points
- Must have a minimum of 12 months driving experience since holding UK driver's licence
- Physically fit and able to undertake the physical aspects of the role
- Excellent interpersonal skills with ability to communicate effectively at all levels
- Ability to complete relevant paper to clinical standard
- Demonstrate ability to work in an emergency ambulance environment
- Ability to prioritise objective and work schedules to make best use of time and resources
- Ability to deliver a high-quality patient experience and ensure service user satisfaction at all times
- Ability to work in a team and also to use own initiative when necessary
- Willingness to adapt and learn new skills
Desirable
- Level 3 CERAD qualification
- A minimum of 6 months frontline experience post qualification.
